Posted by Racheal Keeley on

Getting council approval for your Microblading studio or brow room, and insurances are a critical part of opening any business and isn’t something that you want to skip out on. If you don’t have the appropriate council approval and insurance you may find yourself on the receiving end of a lawsuit from an unhappy client. You can also be fined, forced to close up shop or have your dream taken away from you before you’ve even gotten started.

SALON BUSINESS COUNCIL REQUIREMENTS

Before diving into the specific licenses and insurances that you should be aware of, we Now, each state is different on what they require, so it’s always best to check with your local council. The exact council approval and insurances that you need in one state, town, or city might be different from those that you would need if you were to open your

salon somewhere else. Do your homework, and consider all of these factors when deciding on your location.

Not sure where to turn to figure out which licenses and insurances are necessary? Some options include:

Without further ado, here are the key licenses and permits that you need to open and operate your salon.

1. CERTIFICATE/QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE TREATMENTS YOU WANT TO PERFORM

If you’re already working as a brow stylist, then you will more than likely have this one covered.

Most states require brow stylists to attend some form of beauty school or receive formal training to begin working as a Microblading artist. This is to show that you know the ins and owns of performing that actual service. Ask your training provider for details on the certification you will receive, and they can help assist you with this.

You can view our methods of training and about our Microblading training certification here.

That leads us to the next point, obtaining insurance.

2. COUNCIL APPROVAL

Council approval is required in Australia to perform beauty services. This is to ensure that hygiene protocols are met, as well as the fundamentals you need to operate. Again

this varies depending on what services you are going to offer, so it’s best to check your local state’s website where you will be able to find a list of requirements. Usually, the council will give you a list of things you need to receive your registration, this will prevent you from being fined or shut down.

3. SALON INSURANCE

A salon’s insurance is the bread and butter to getting started. Insurance helps protect you before you begin to ensure that you don’t run into any sticky situations before you open your doors.

This will vary depending on the type of services you are going to be offering, whether you will have staff or not, and also your location. Microblading requires specific types of insurance before you can start working on clients.

The department of health website is a great resource that can help you find the specific steps for applying for council approval in your state.

4. BUSINESS REGISTRY

You will require this registration if you intend to, or currently, carry on a business in Australia. Your business name must be on the Business Names Register. This national registration service replaces past state and territory services.

This is something you will only need to do once a year, but will keep your business registered and legal.

5. BUILDING ZONES AND PERMITS

Making sure the building you’re going to be working from is zoned correctly, can save you surprises in the future. An office space may not be approved for retails/medical/consulting, as it may not have the right requirements for the council approval. Always check this first so you know if you will need to do renovations.

This varies depending on what services you are going to offer, so it’s best to check your local states website where you will be able to find a list of requirements. Usually, the council will give you a list of things you need to receive your registration, this will prevent you from being fined or shut down.
